In this manière noir stone lithograph ‘Jumping the Shadow’ the figure of a boar emerging from the lower part of a man jumps forward over the shadow of a ruined city from which the apparition of a woman arises. The work was made after the artist made a trip to the ruined village of Oradour sur Glane and in response to the devastation there. The process used to produce the stone lithograph was a combination of manière noir for the boar-man and delicate lithographic crayon line work for the figure and her shadow, this duality enriches the reading of the work.
Diane Victor- “in this work, the boar jumps his own shadow, but shadows are a part of our history, they are our ruins and sooner or later your shadow will rise up to meet you”
