In "The Gardener", the viewer wonders where the gardener is. Looking at the painting, we are drawn instead to the tropical jungle landscape unfolding before our eyes. The landscape seems harmonious and symbiotic. But on closer inspection, a circle appears in the centre of the painting. It is the gardener's hat. According to the artist, a gardener always wears a hat.
It begs the question: why a gardener in the middle of a forest? What an idea! According to the artist's research, man is part of the natural eco-system. In extra-accidental societies and forest peoples, man has played an important role in fertilising the land and propagating species of plants and fruit trees. According to the artist, this painting is "an exploration of the meaning of human action, and a critique of the desired control over nature".
The painting is also not to be taken in the literal sense of its title, and evokes the inner dimension (emotions) and mystique given by these flights of small coloured shapes, like the sheet of this ghostly gardener.
